Surigao del Sur Conducts Cave Survey in Support of Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Mapping
SURIGAO DEL SUR — In celebration of World Tourism Month 2025, the Provincial Tourism Office of Surigao del Sur launches the comprehensive cave reconnaissance survey across several municipalities, marking a significant step toward integrating sustainability into the province's growing tourism sector.
With this year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the initiative seeks to promote eco-adventure tourism while safeguarding the region’s natural resources. The survey covers key areas such as Tandag City, Carrascal, Cortes, Lanuza, San Miguel, Marihatag, and San Agustin, all of which are known for their ecological richness and potential as nature-based tourism destinations.
The cave survey is part of the province’s preparatory efforts for two major events: the upcoming Provincial Cave Congress and Regional Cave Congress. Both gatherings aim to promoting speleotourism, the exploration and appreciation of caves as tourist attractions, while emphasizing ecological preservation, visitor safety, and scientific cave management. By systematically documenting cave locations, structures, and conditions, the project also aims to support informed decision-making for tourism development and environmental conservation. The data gathered will be instrumental in aligning tourism initiatives with Surigao del Sur’s Sustainable Tourism Master Plan.
Leading the technical aspects of the survey was Mr. Mikael Vincent “Mikko” Cuevas, Project Leader of the Philippine-American Speleological Expedition (PASE) 2020–2025. As recognized expert in cave classification and ecological site assessments, he provided guidance in identifying cave features, potential hazards, and conservation value. His whole team, moreover, have conducted similar work in Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Sur, and Samar, highlighting the regional significance of Surigao del Sur’s efforts and its contribution to a larger national framework for speleological exploration and biodiversity protection.
The survey was carried out in close coordination with local government tourism officers, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Lianga, CENRO Cantilan, and various community stakeholders. This collaborative approach ensured not only comprehensive data collection but also strengthened ties between agencies and communities involved in cave protection and sustainable tourism planning.
The Provincial Government’s cave survey initiative reflects a broader vision of building a tourism industry that is scientifically informed, community-centered, and environmentally responsible. As cave systems in the province gain recognition for their ecological and adventure value, Surigao del Sur is poised to emerge as a top destination for eco-tourists, conservation advocates, and adventure seekers alike.
