Celebrating the Heartbeat of Surigao del Sur: A Tribute to World Tourism Month 2025
Surigao del Sur, Philippines — With resounding pride and deep gratitude, Surigao del Sur concludes its vibrant and meaningful celebration of World Tourism Month 2025, a month that honored not only the beauty of its natural landscapes and cultural heritage but also the very people who make the province a beacon of sustainable and inclusive tourism.
Under this year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the celebration unfolded over several impactful days filled with reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment toward tourism that uplifts both people and the planet.
At the heart of this year’s celebration was the recognition of the province’s tourism workers, the individuals whose everyday dedication continues to drive the local tourism industry forward. In a moving tribute video, the Provincial Tourism Office paid homage to these “unsung heroes,” thanking them for their relentless service, passion, and positive impact on their communities.
Among those recognized were:
- Mr. Aljun Barrios of Hinatuan – Fish Feeder & Lifeguard at the iconic Enchanted River
- Ms. Liezel Chavaria of Tagbina – Manager, San Nicolas Development Cooperative
- Ms. Norma De Lara of Lanuza – Weaver, producer, designer, and entrepreneur behind De Lara Agsam Fashion Fern
- Ms. Margie Tindogan of Madrid – Beader & President of Bayogo Traditional Arts Organization
- Ms. Catherine Urbiztondo of Tandag City – City Tourism Staff & Designated Statistics Focal Person
- Ms. Monaliza Baliguat of Carrascal – Community Tour Guide
These individuals represent the vibrant spirit of Surigao del Sur, where tourism is not just an industry, but a way of life rooted in pride, purpose, and community.
On September 25, the second day of the celebration saw a deeply enriching Eco-Cultural Immersion across selected municipalities, guided by Provincial Tourism Officer Ms. Mary Vil C. Chan and supported by local government units (LGUs), tourism staff, and community leaders. The immersion allowed participants to experience first-hand the traditions, crafts, and cultural practices that define the province’s identity.
Special thanks were extended to:
- Ms. Glenda Joy DC Felix – Tourism Officer, Lanuza
- Ms. Sylvia A. Sumod-Ong – Designated Tourism Officer, Carmen
- Ms. Eden Cleo A. Mollaneda – Tourism Officer II, Madrid
- Hon. April Mata – SB Member of Madrid and resort owner
These leaders, along with barangay officials and community partners, demonstrated the power of collaboration in preserving the stories, sites, and soul of Surigao del Sur. In a forward-looking move, the province officially launched its Tourism Data System, designed to improve data collection, streamline management processes, and enable smarter tourism development planning. This initiative signifies a strategic pivot towards innovation, sustainability, and accountability in tourism governance.
The celebration also included the Awarding of Plaques of Recognition to Municipal and City Tourism Officers and LGU staff for their contributions to the Cave Reconnaissance Survey, a project aimed at cataloging and conserving the province’s vast cave systems. This culminated in an Exit Conference, where findings and future conservation strategies were shared.
Additionally, discussions were held to shape the future of ATOSSur (Association of Tourism Officers of Surigao del Sur) and the presentation of the ATOP Constitution and By-Laws, setting the foundation for stronger coordination and professional development across the tourism sector.
The celebration was further uplifted by an inspiring message from Provincial Administrative Officer John Vincent C. Pimentel, who emphasized unity, innovation, and shared responsibility in sustaining Surigao del Sur’s tourism success.
While the 3-day highlight of World Tourism Month 2025 has come to a close, the message resonates far beyond the celebration: Tourism is transformation. It transforms communities, empowers local workers, protects cultural and natural assets, and shapes a future where economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand.
The Provincial Tourism Office extends its deepest gratitude to all participants, leaders, and community partners who made this celebration not only possible but profoundly meaningful.
Together, let us continue to champion a tourism sector that is resilient, inclusive, and future-ready.
