Exploring New Depths: Surigao del Sur Welcomes Philippine-American Speleological Collaboration
SAN MIGUEL, SURIGAO DEL SUR — The beauty and mystery beneath Surigao del Sur’s landscape continue to inspire exploration and collaboration. On November 3, 2025, the Provincial Tourism Office of Surigao del Sur, in partnership with the Sarangani Bay Area Outdoor Club, Inc. led by Mr. Mikael Vincent Cuevas, and the National Speleological Society (NSS) of the United States of America, paid a successful courtesy visit to the Provincial Governor of Surigao del Sur.
During the visit, Provincial Tourism Officer Ms. Mary Vil Cruz-Chan and her team presented the Proposed Philippine-American Joint Speleological Project 2026, a pioneering initiative that aims to deepen scientific research, promote international cooperation and encourage responsible cave tourism across the province.
Surigao del Sur is home to an incredible network of caves and natural formations that remain largely unexplored. Through this joint project, both local and international experts will work together to document and preserve these natural wonders, ensuring that exploration goes hand in hand with conservation.
The Provincial Government led by Gov. Johnny T. Pimentel, has expressed strong support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to highlight Surigao del Sur’s unique geological heritage while creating opportunities for sustainable tourism and community development.
As Surigao del Sur continues to open its doors to adventurers, scientists, and nature enthusiasts, this collaboration marks another exciting step toward positioning the province as one of the Philippines’ top destinations for eco-tourism and speleological discovery.
Come and explore Surigao del Sur, where adventure begins and nature’s wonders never end.
