The Municipality of Marihatag is a coastal municipality in the province of Surigao del Sur. The municipality has a land area of 312.50 square kilometers or 120.66 square miles which constitutes 6.34% of Surigao del Sur's total area. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 18,518. This represented 3.13% of the total population of Surigao del Sur province, or 0.71% of the overall population of the Caraga region. Marihatag was part of the Municipality of Lianga and was later made part of the Municipality of Otieza by E.O 445 dated June 6, 1951. Executive Order No. 69 dated September 23, 1954, transferred the seal of the municipal government from Otieza to Marihatag. On June 10, 1955, 1261 renamed the Municipality of Otieza to Marihatag. Republic Act No. 3489 dated June 16, 1962 created the Municipality of Otieza and eventually separated the barrios of Salvacion, Otieza and Santo Niño.
